Being the first to open in early November and the last to close in mid May, there is little down time between preparation for the following season and Alberta’s ski areas are already announcing early bird deals for the 2009/2010 season, allowing guests to plan ahead and save on dollars. Alberta’s famed Rocky Mountain resorts include Norquay, Sunshine Village, Lake Louise and Marmot Basin.
These award winning giants are accessed by Calgary and Edmonton International Airports and are renowned worldwide for their unique townships, majestic scenery, wildlife and dry powder snow.
Unlike purpose built resorts the townships of Banff and Jasper which access these ski areas are located in National Parks and World Heritage sites, where wildlife roam freely and nature is at its best. It’s common to see big horn sheep and elk on the outskirts of town, plus moose and coyote in the mountain ranges.
Guests to the Canadian Rockies of Alberta will be treated to big mountain ski experiences with world class facilities and terrain to cater for all abilities.
Each resort has worked to enhance its experience for guests visiting in the 2009 to 2010 ski season with Lake Louise
announcing a winter interpretive program featuring educational signage throughout the mountain, highlighting some of the wildlife and scenery that makes this resort so unique. At Sunshine Village, a new SlopeTracker system will be introduced where guests can be fitted with an arm band equipped with upgraded GPS technology which monitors statistics over the course of the day. SlopeTracker is capable of calculating such statistics as top speed, number of runs, calories burned and hours spent riding. At the end of the day, users simply return their armband and receive a printout of their days experience.
Freestylers will enjoy the boxes, rails, tabletops and jumps set up at Norquay’s famed terrain park known to locals as “The Backyard”. This park is designed by well renowned Canadian park deisgner Jeff Patterson and is gauranteed to have freestylers pushing the envelope through various levels and stages of progression.
Marmot Basin at Jasper is working on future development plans that will include the installation of new ski lifts to replace older
lifts, improvements to existing on-mountain chalets and restaurants, a new kids area, cross-country skiing trails, and additional snowmaking systems in the upper area of the mountain. A new high speed chairlift lift is on the cards to be installed as early as this July, to be ready for operation for the 2009-10 season. Majestic scenery, natural beauty, wildlife, castle like hotels and rustic lodges is what makes a ski holiday in the Canadian Rockies of Alberta an organic experience.
