Athabasca Country comes alive with the bringing of winter. North of Edmonton on Highway 2, a wonderland of winter events and activities for couples, families and individuals is only a short drive away. From showshoeing to skiing, snowboarding,  snowmobiling, and top spots for ice fishing, Athabasca Country offers something for everyone to experience and enjoy this winter.

Perhaps a warm cup of cocoa beside a roaring fire, gazing up at Alberta’s spectacular northern lights, or indulging in a delicious meal of local produce is more your wintertime style. No problem, because Athabasca Country is host to numerous, eclectic local businesses where you can shop, eat and stay this winter.

Long Lake Ski Fest and Snowman Building Contest
Long Lake Ski Hill is holding "Snow Fest" on February 11‐15, 2010, which features a snowman building contest through the week, lift ticket specials, treasure hunts, and a costume contest on the Santa Ski day (Saturday, Feb 13th), and a church service on the hill on Sunday, weather permitting.

Province of Alberta  Presents the Annual Family Day Free Fishing Weekend
To encourage folks to give fishing a try, any person may fish without an Alberta Sportfishing Licence on these dates but they must follow all other rules and regulations as outlined in Alberta’s Guide to Sportfishing Regulations.

Athabasca River Runners Annual Snowmobile Poker Rally
Gear up and make some miles or visit and share stories on the trail during this 80 km family‐friendly snowmobile rally in February. From novice to expert rider alike, there is something for everyone as you negotiate the River Runner’s groomed trails throughout the diverse and picturesque terrain of Athabasca valley and surrounding area. The snowmobile trails are also open to riders all season long.

With 10 km of well‐signed, groomed trails, Muskeg Creek’s gently rolling terrain and challenging hills offer something for cross country skiers of every ability and technique. Or take in the Trail’s scenic views and wildlife on snowshoes, a long and cherished Canadian tradition and an affordable winter activity the whole family can enjoy.
